Our Expertise in Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture

MIA Corporation, led by its President and CEO, Dr. Ataur Rahman, capitalizes on the extensive expertise and global experience that Dr. Rahman has developed over decades in aquaculture, fisheries management, environmental conservation, and policy advisory roles. Dr. Rahman’s work across Asia, Africa, and North America has profoundly shaped MIA Corporation's vision of sustainable resource management, particularly in the fields of aquatic resource conservation, indigenous knowledge integration, and community-based fisheries.

Key Projects and Expertise Areas:

Aquaculture Development and Fish Farm Engineering

MIA Corporation’s insights into sustainable aquaculture development stem from Dr. Rahman’s management of the “Rehabilitation of Fish Seed Farms and Fish Culture Development” project, implemented in collaboration with UNDP and FAO in Laos. His work in technical training and project management focused on the sustainable enhancement of aquaculture systems, ensuring ecological and economic benefits for local communities. His practical experience also includes his research in fish breeding from his M.Sc. in Fisheries Biology & Limnology at Bangladesh Agricultural University, which involved studies on inducing breeding in endangered fish species, further informing MIA’s approach to aquaculture systems.

Community-Based Fisheries Management

Dr. Rahman’s leadership in community-based fisheries management is a cornerstone of MIA Corporation’s services. His role in the “Lao-Mekong Indigenous Fishery Development” project, executed in partnership with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in Laos, focused on integrating indigenous knowledge with scientific methodologies to ensure sustainable fisheries management. Additionally, his Ph.D. research at the University of Waterloo involved the integration of local and indigenous knowledge systems for the sustainable management of aquatic resources in the Lower Mekong Basin. This research, supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada, has shaped MIA’s approach to fisheries management, particularly in areas that require the balancing of local traditions with modern scientific practices.

Policy Development for Fisheries and Aquaculture

MIA Corporation’s capacity to support policy development is built on Dr. Rahman’s extensive policy work with organizations such as CIDA in Laos, where he contributed to planning and establishing the National Aquatic Resources Institute (NARI) for the sustainable management of aquatic resources. Additionally, his work with the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock (Bangladesh) and Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council in developing fisheries policies provides a robust foundation for MIA’s policy advisory services. Dr. Rahman’s role as Policy & Planning Analyst with Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) in the Northwest Territories also underscores MIA’s ability to address complex regulatory environments and develop actionable policies for sustainable resource management.

Environmental Conservation in Fisheries

MIA Corporation is informed by Dr. Rahman’s extensive background in environmental conservation, particularly during his time as an Environmental Scientist with INAC in Nunavut, where he managed environmental assessments and compliance monitoring for major mining projects, ensuring minimal impacts on aquatic ecosystems. His experience in assessing environmental impacts and developing conservation strategies has contributed to MIA’s strong focus on the sustainable management of blue carbon ecosystems and the conservation of fisheries in vulnerable regions. His work with UNICEF in Tanzania on environmental protection projects further enriches MIA’s environmental conservation initiatives.
