Our Expertise in Environmental Assessment and Management

Key Projects and Expertise Areas:

Environmental Assessment and Compliance in Nunavut (Canada)

Leveraging Dr. Rahman’s experience as an Environmental Scientist with the Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) of the Government of Canada in Nunavut, MIA Corporation has a deep understanding of environmental assessment and regulatory compliance. Dr. Rahman has led environmental assessments for projects like the Baffinland Mary River Iron Ore Mine Project, where he led comprehensive evaluations of environmental impacts related to mining operations, infrastructure development, and shipping routes. His strategic recommendations, such as opting for the northern shipping route via Milne Inlet, have proven vital in minimizing ecological risks and protecting culturally sensitive areas.  Additionally, his expertise includes managing environmental assessments for projects such as the Meadowbank, Meliadine, and Doris North gold mining projects, the Jericho diamond mining project, and the High Lake and Hackett River base metals mining projects. Through collaboration with regulatory bodies like the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB), Nunavut Water Board (NWB), and Nunavut Planning Commission (NPC), as well as Indigenous organizations, Dr. Rahman has ensured compliance with environmental standards and the implementation of effective mitigation measures. This wealth of experience enhances MIA Corporation’s ability to offer robust environmental assessment, management and mitigation solutions that protect sensitive ecosystems and support community well-being.

Policy Development and Environmental Management in the Northwest Territories (Canada)

Under Dr. Rahman’s leadership, MIA Corporation is well-positioned to provide expert guidance on policy development and environmental management. His role as a Policy & Planning Analyst with INAC (Government of Canada) in the Northwest Territories involved assessing and updating policies and regulations related to sustainable natural resource management. This experience includes overseeing significant mining projects, such as the Ekati, Diavik, and Snap Lake diamond mines and the Giant Mine Remediation Project.  Dr. Rahman’s efforts in developing GIS-supported databases and environmental management models have been instrumental in enhancing the monitoring and management of reclamation securities. His work on the Giant Mine Remediation Project, addressing critical environmental challenges like arsenic trioxide contamination, demonstrates a commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection, which MIA Corporation now brings to its clients. Through an integrated approach that combines scientific methodologies with traditional knowledge, MIA Corporation is committed to advancing sustainable development and environmental stewardship around the world.
